If you get to Milford really early and get the first boat trip there will not be to many people. Water is usually calmer first thing in the morning and more chance of reflections. BUT BE THERE EARLY !!

I have lived in the area for many years off and on and I would say do the overnight trip to Doubtful Sound with Deep cove charters I have just this week been on that trip. I have also been lucky enough to cruise Doubtful with Real Journeys. Great for a day trip. Some people find Milford Sound an anti climax after the spectacular drive through. If you are coming here in Feb we have long twilights and you could possably do both. Fiordland is great

doubtful... But for the true experience, Dusky, Chalky and Pressie leave the others for dead... Need to contact private operators to get in there though... Less commercialised

Hi my preference would Doubtfull sound I have been atour driver in NZ for just on thirty years and doubtfull is still the best The weather makes a lot of difference to what you exspect the rain brings out the magic waterfalls so if can strike it wright just a few hours after rain is perfect.Milford is also brillant especially overnight cruises. Daytime cruises at milford especially around 1:00 pm are rather hectic but if you like crowds then that is the time. Overnights cruises are the way to go if you want the best but allow a few days to get the best experince from Milford and Doubtfull

Hi From NZ, hubby and I did the Doubtful Sounds overnight boat cruise a few years ago, I think this would be the better of the two, although we also did the milford a few years earlier than Doubtful, both spectacular, the overnight cruise was the highlight for us. Enjoy whatever you decide.
