gina If you are going into the mountains just make sure you are prepared. The weather can change at the drop of a hat. The mountains in the South Island are spectacular and if you have the right gear and plan your trip well you will have an awesome time. Just remember though it is very isolated and you can be up to three days from help if anything goes wrong.

Re:Aussie asking about NZ Reply to this message
well Gina. Do you like ruffing it or do you like the shops and fine wine. Do you like the back country or the cities and towns? Depends how much time you have. the best way to see the place is drive from top to bottom. The terain changes regularly not like the Nullabor. Meet the locals, visit the pubs. The South Island must not be missed though and thats coming from A Jaffa. I've been everywhere man. Ask any question.

South Island...stick to the west coast, the lakes district, the fiords and the catlins. if you go to dunedin take a couch to burn. the east coast from timaru to christchurch is boring so go inland.

Re:Aussie asking about NZ Reply to this message
Golf is just a nice walk disturbed by chasing a stupid wee ball...
Now petrol prices... at the moment $1.58l for 91oct.
September is still wintery in NZ more so in the Sth Isd.
You should go to Kaikoura for the whale watching and go to Hamner for the hot pools... most of the rest of anything to do seems to be either in the Queenstown area(although not sure this is NZ anymore???) or around the Nelson/sounds area, good hiking there.
And been as it is still wintery-ish in Sept. the ski fields will most likely still be going...

Re:Aussie asking about NZ Reply to this message
If you are coming to the South Island and love golf you MUST play Clearwater in ChCh, designed by Bob Charles!

Definately Queenstown and Wanaka (Queenstown has a nice course too). Stay away from Invercargill. It's just a cold horrible hole that Mick Jagger called the ass hole of the world, he wasn't wrong!

Top of the South you have Blenhiem which has one of the best wine trails in the world and produces the best Sav's.

Re:Aussie asking about NZ Reply to this message
fabulous golfing around queenstown The whole area around there can't be missed Milford Sound WALK in via in the track - takes days but is one of THE walks in theworld Take plenty of mozzie repellent with you. The glaciers. Top of the South Island Abel Tasman National park. Fabulous boutique beaches around that way that deep golden colour which is my favourite and great for bushwalking, kayaking andwater stuff. Near there all the wineries - fantastic wine in the Nelson area
Akaroa that little French settlement nearChristchurch
September will still be wintry in the deep south However that can also mean frosty snowy blue sky days that are stunning. In wintertheQueenstown areais out of this world
- is quite touristy though but so much to do for youngpeople
Some of my favourite places anyway

Aussie asking about NZ Reply to this message
I would like to know a few things about NZ! Only south island:
How much is petrol there at the moment?
What would you say are the best golf courses in the south island no matter how much green fees are?
What places and activities should not be missed?
Is September a good time to travel?

Thanks
